Camphor Wood
Cinnamomum camphora (commonly known as camphor tree, camphorwood or camphor laurel) is a large evergreen tree that grows up to 20–30 m (66–98 ft) tall.  The leaves have a glossy, waxy appearance and smell of camphor when crushed.  In spring, it produces bright green foliage with masses of small white flowers.  It produces clusters of black, berry-like fruit around 1 cm (0.39 in) in diameter.  Its pale bark is very rough and fissured vertically.
Cinnamomum camphora is native to China south of the Yangtze River, Taiwan, southern Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, and has been introduced to many other countries.
Many years past, the lumbering of the campherwood tree was grounds for punishment by death in China.  This is because this wood was specifically reserved for the making of ceremonial items for temples and the Emperor.  These days, camphorwood is treasured for its natural fragrance.  The menthol smell found in current day ointments is extracted from the oils of different species of the camphor tree.
Camphor wood is often used to make chests in China.  The natural scent wards off insects and is said to prevent silver from tarnishing. We have custom made these chests and drawers for Sum Ngai Brass to take advantage of the natural beauty and functionality of camphor wood.
