The dragon is one of the oldest mythical creatures in China. Considered just and benevolent, dragons have come to symbolise Imperial authority and are associated with all aspects of the ruling Emperor. They are therefore used on court costume and as a decorative motif on artefacts made specifically for Imperial use.
