The orientation of an elephant's trunk is different between EAST and WEST. To the Chinese, the following is recognized: TRUNK UP = Brings Happiness The trunk up posture is interpreted as the elephant spraying water. This movement is very active and relaxed while fun showing happiness. TRUNK DOWN = Brings Good Fortune The trunk down posture is interpreted as the trunk absorbing the fortune of the earth i.e. gold and nutrients. This is the reason trunk down posture is believed to bring good fortune contrary to Western belief. According to legend, the elephant is one of the "SEVEN NORTH STARS" and they can predict the future. This was evident in Thailand in 2004. It was reported that the elephants broke off their chains and escaped to the high ground.
